News: Internally Displaced Persons
A press release from the International Office of Migration reports that ongoing tensions along Iraq's northern border are further complicating the lives of internally displaced Iraqis:
The Japan Times also reports that the "Number of displaced Iraqis is soaring"...With tension along Iraq's northern borders causing small-scale displacement, rent prices in cities such as Erbil are continuing to increase with monitors also reporting that IDP families are being evicted because they can no longer afford their monthly rent.
The situation is further compounded by lack of employment and social care. Top priority needs in Erbil cited by nearly 100 per cent of the IDPs assessed there are shelter and access to work.
Authorities in Erbil have stated monetary assistance is planned for IDP families but it is unclear when such assistance will begin.

How does this information square up with what we're hearing in the major media about the "improved" security situation in Baghdad, with its lower American and Iraqi death totals and even some thousands of residents returning to their homes?
